4 Tips for Hosting a Blogging Contest

More and more bloggers are holding a blog contest on their site. While this is an easy way to promote your site, get a link back, improve your site ranks and many more, a blogger can get easily get carried away and start a blogging contest without thinking about the requirements for a good blogging contest. I would like to share 5 tips for hosting a blogging contest:

  1. Make People WANT to Enter
  2. It is not easy to make people enter your contest with lot’s contest to pick nowadays. But making contest easy to enter is one way to attract people entering it. Please don’t make people do a list of things that is longer than your weekly grocery list e.g write a 200 words review, linking back to your site, stumble it, digg it, technorati it, subscribe to feeds, tell your neighbour, tell your office colleague, tell you friends well you get my point right?

  3. Offer a (great) PRIZE(s)
  4. Personally I think the best prize is always cash! Hard cold cash. The next best thing is a Nintendo Wii. :) If you offer USD100 at the beginning of the contest, you should honor your promise and give it although there are only 5 entrants received at the end of the day! Don’t say that due to the low entry for this contest, then you lowered the winning prize. That is daylight robbery and people will hate and write bad things about your blog. But if you like the controversies then do it! Good example is about the Cow getting an i-Phoney.

  5. Set a Specific DEADLINE
  6. Don’t start a blog contest without letting the readers know the deadline. The deadline must be a specific like ‘This contest will run until the Sept 31st 2007 and I will announce the winner on Oct 1st 2007′. You can also set a dateline based on number of entries received such as 30, 50 and this hopefully will make interested bloggers to join early.

  7. PUBLICIZE your Blog Contest!
  8. The easiest way to publicize your blog contest is to post about it from your blogs. There a lots of blogging contest directory that you can find by searching through google and it’s free to join.

So, happy blogging and starting a blog contest! For me, I am thinking of starting a Rajawang contest but I am not able to provide interesting prizes as yet (USD30 interesting enough for you?). I have joined a few blogging contests but never won anything, it reminds me of my luck in lucky draws :)

now the power of contest already being a “bait” to attract traffics and visitors. The true is people really like to get something as rewards - even in blogging. but there also a scam out there that already use this kind of contest, where there is no winner or choose himself as a winner - like ashwin khanna scam contest.

btw - mr rajawang the wii prize is a good start up.

Wii is a good prize! Contests are too saturated right now and some may even do scams which is very disheartening in the blogosphere like Ashwin I guess.

@dott-com - yeah, I read the ashwin khanna story from the Cow’s last week. I think if you can give a link back to all the entry in a post they will appreciate it more even though they didn’t win anything..even better if the PR is high. :)

It is scary to see how people are reacting to ashwin’s unethical exercise. Just google him and you will know it. If I were him I don’t know how I will sleep. He might as well retires from blogging.

I want to hold contest but most of my readers are non-bloggers. Sigh…
